Objects from the permanent collection tell the story of one of the area's earliest families: the Walthalls. In 1828, they left their home in Virginia to start over in Ohio. William Walthall recalled the trip he made as a child in his memoir, and visitors can experience the journey through his words and view the family treasures. "Our permanent exhibit, 'A Quaker Journey,' recounts the Quaker migration to southwest Ohio," said curator Ruth Brindle. " is tricounty area was heavily settled by Quakers who were moving from the Carolinas in the 1820s and 1830s as a result of the slave culture of the South." e center displays an 1840s-style Quaker meetinghouse. e blue- print used to build the replica is from an actual meetinghouse that sits fi ve miles down the road from the college and that is in use today. Ac- cording to Brindle, guided tours start in the meetinghouse and off er "Quaker History 101" for those who aren't familiar with their beliefs. Rotating exhibits change two to three times annually. Some are in- house exhibits that are researched designed and created using the cen- ter's own collection. e next exhibit, "Knick-Knacks and Knowledge," will be shown November 1, 2016, through April 2017. It off ers an in- teractive game that highlights items from the center's extensive toy collection that was put together by one of the college's history classes.
